Does competition yield good spatial outcomes? In this paper, we survey relevant theory on equilibrium analysis in spatial competition, describe the limitations, and show precisely a key challenge to extending it. We de.fine a measure of spatial deadweight loss and apply it to several cases studies, with the results suggesting that competition yields relatively inefficient spatial outcomes. We present spatial regressions on these same case studies to demonstrate additional issues relating to inequality. Finally, we present experiment results that support a key behavioral assumption, zero conjectural variance, that facilitates further analysis through agent-based modeling.
